Then the text. Fresh, clean and intact interior. Note that the last 20 pages, including the tables, have reduced readability due to a transfer of ink from front to back which gives the appearance of overprinting. A bibliographic note in pencil on the lower cover. Corners and fields rubbed, one corner very slightly dulled. Covers rubbed with some scuffs, but good. Spine rubbed, with scuffs at the foot and crown, with a small tear without loss at the crown. A fine, firm copy. A scholar, translator and encyclopedist, Fran\u00e7ois-Vincent Toussaint is known for this work which caused a scandal and was banned upon its publication in 1748. The book nevertheless enjoyed great success, and some articles were taken up by the Encyclopedia. This work is based on morality and natural justice, and rejects the need for revealed religion, natural morality being independent of the social laws brought about by religion.
